Welcome to Blackbourne U3A

U3A activities in the Blackbourne area (Thurston, Elmswell, Stanton, etc.,) began in 1992 at the suggestion of the Suffolk Community Education Service.  Initially the activities operated under the aegis of Bury St. Edmunds U3A but, in September 1994, Blackbourne U3A became a separate entity. In 2006 it affiliated to the Third Age Trust.

Blackbourne U3A has been supported from the outset by the Community Education Service and initial financial support was also received from Suffolk ACRE and St. Edmundsbury Borough Council.  The U3A Committee is grateful for this support;  also for that of the Mid-Suffolk District Council.  Activities being arranged for 2011/12 include monthly lectures, study groups, educational visits, periodic newsletters.

The programme of Lecture Meetings and Study Groups for 2011/12 is now available.  The cost of membership is £10 per annum. Currently in 2011, Blackbourne U3A has a full complement of 550 members. We are now taking names for a possible new intake of members in September 2012 but we cannot guarantee that everyone on the waiting lists will find a place. However, we will do our best to fit you in eventually, depending on the number of current members who do not rejoin in 2012.  Please contact the Membership Secretary, Sue Cattermole, The Barn, Flatts Lane, Tostock, Bury St Edmunds IP30 9NZ (Tel: 01359 272572) for any information regarding membership.

2011 Quiz Winners and Answers (click here for the full list of answers)

The 5 winners, with equal scores of 97 out of 99, a very high standard are:Judy Ballam, Maggie Cooper. Angela Gibbs, Mary Hooker, Sue Upton. They will each receive £18.

The winner of the prize draw for £10 is Phil Prigg.

Thanks to all who entered the Quiz this year – there was a very high standard of entries again. As usual you came up with some different answers to me – so I had more research to do!

E6 - After asking advice from a local authority I have deleted this question as current research indicates that the Fishmongers did not have a coat of arms after all.

B4 - RAF Raydon was near Hadleigh but the question says “is to be found near Hadleigh”, so “Wattisham” is my answer.

I10 - I accepted both BYRHTNOTH and BRYTHNOTH

We managed to make a profit of £135.20 for charity, which this year will again be the “ST NICHOLAS HOSPICE”, a popular recipient with Blackbourne U3A members.  Again, thanks to everyone who supported the Quiz
